- A special thankyou to each and everyone who came to
- the 1994 ARRL Southwestern Division Convention held here in
- San Diego, this past weekend, Aug 26-28th. From reports I
- have seen, very few complaints were heard from the
- approximately 2600 folks who attended. If you missed it, did
- you ever miss out on a great event. There were special
- events, technical sessions and forums, t hunts, hospitality
- rooms. The list goes on and on. And prizes!! Boy, was there
- ever prizes. There was one RADIO given away each hour. The
- lucky grand prize winner is going to be playing around with
- an Icom 736 HF/6m rig. In fact, the winner was:
-
- É═══════════════════════╜
- º Norman Rolph, KE6BJH º
- º Palm Desert, Ca º
- ├═══════════════════════¼
-
- Congratulations to Norman, and also to all the others who
- were able to walk away with a great prize or something they
- could not live without. The convention committee would like
- to thank you for attending!! Make plans to attend the next
- Southwestern Divion convention, to be held Labor Day weekend
- in 1995, in Long Beach, Ca on board the Queen Mary. I am sure
- it will be a great time!! See you there!!

- Subject: Beefed up script files for SuperMorse?
- To: info-hams@ucsd.edu
-
- Super Morse has a facility where the user can script QSO templates for help in building copy speed.
- I downloaded V4.1 of the product, and it included two different scripts. (Maybe three--I don't
- remember exactly.) After drilling with SM for two or three hours, I think I'm responding more
- to what I've learned about the script, rather than reading the code. SM also has the capability to utilize
- user-entered cities, names, states, rigs, antenna descriptions and the like. However, it is the
- format and content of the QSO script that tends get memorized, and hence detracts from
- the level of learning one would like to achieve.
-
- Has anyone composed additional, *interesting* scripts? And if so, how might one go about
- accessing those?

- I have a problem with one of the diagrams in the ARRL Handbook
- (if my memory serves me correctly). There is a diagram of a
- plane wave incident upon the surface of the moon and the resulting
- reflected wave follows the contour of the surface.
-
- NOT! Look at incident angles and look at reflected angles
- and that is not the shape of the reflected wave. Unless
- I'm doing something wrong.

- Subject: Number of Call Signs
- To: info-hams@ucsd.edu
-
- OK, basic math quiz time -
- Everyone knows that the FCC says they've used up all the call
- signs of a certain type in some areas, i.e. the 1by3 calls in
- districts 0, 4, 5, 6, 7, & 8 and 2by2 Extra Class calls in
- Hawaii, Alaska, & Puerto Rico.
- I have seen articles on the history of call signs in the
- US, and how the FCC has allocated them and for what reasons
- over the years, however, I was wondering just how many call signs
- (that is, combinations of letters and numbers) does the FCC
- really have at its disposal. Therefore I humbly submit the
- following;
-
- 1by1 calls: (4)(10)(26) = 1,040
- 1by2 calls: (4)(10)(26)(26) = 27,040
- 1by3 calls: (4)(10)(26)(26)(26) = 703,040
- 2by1 calls: (3)(26)(10)(26) + (1)(12)(10)(26) = 23,400
- 2by2 calls: (3)(26)(10)(26)(26) + (1)(12)(10)(26)(26) = 608,400
- 2by3 calls:
- (3)(26)(10)(26)(26)(26) + (1)(12)(10)(26)(26)(26) = 15,818,400
-
- Which gives a raw total of 17,181,320 (of which about 3.5% are in
- use currently (600,000)).
- If one removes the suffixes that obviously would not be issued
- (i.e., ASS, KKK, HCI, etc.) the number is reduced by about 4700
- or so (remove 940 for every by3 suffix removed).
- Of course, there would have to be a fundamental change in how the
- FCC allocates call signs, but this may not be too far off,
- depending on how the FCC implements the "vanity" call sign
- program. That is, it could make virtually all the combinations
- available.
- Just food for thought. Also, since I don't have a Cray or other
- supercomputer immediately available, there could be
- error/oversight in the above, any additional insight will be
- taken graciously.

-
- I worked W6RO on Sunday evening. Long Beach ARA members have schedules for
- operating the station. Guests in the Queen Mary hotel with amateur licenses
- are also permitted to be guest operators of W6RO.
-
- W6RO is not in main database of the QRZ CD ROM. I sent a QSL card to the
- Long Beach ARA address (found in clubs directory of the QRZ CD-ROM).
